Australian/Canadian Hand Osteoarthritis Index

The AUSCAN Index is a self-administered questionnaire that assesses the three dimensions of pain, disability and joint stiffness in hand osteoarthritis using a battery of 15 questions. Scaled on 5-point Likert scales and 100mm Visual Analog Scales, the AUSCAN 3.1 is a valid, reliable and responsive measure of outcome. The index has been subject to validation studies which have addressed the following clinimetric issues:

  • Reliability - stability, internal consistency
  • Validity - face, content, construct
  • Responsiveness
Consulting services are available from Professor Bellamy, to support use of the AUSCAN Index. These services include advice regarding clinical trial design, selection of AUSCAN Index measurement versions and scaling formats, parameters for sample size estimation based on the AUSCAN Index, and AUSCAN data interpretation with respect to the clinical importance of both the response achieved and the health state attained.

Use of the AUSCAN 3.1 Index is supported by the latest version of the User Guide. The AUSCAN User Guide III contains information about index derivation, specific clinimetric issues, formatting, index presentation, and score calculation.

AUSCAN 3.1 for the USA is available in English and Spanish. The Spanish version has been adapted for Hispanic Americans of both linguistic origins. Both the AUSCAN 3.1 English for USA and the AUSCAN 3.1 Spanish for USA are available in 5-point Likert scaling format.
